Softball opens season at .500
Hosting the 2014 Louisiana Classic at Lamson Park, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns finished the weekend at 2-2-1, beating the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Northern Iowa Panthers, losing to the Texas Longhorns twice and tying the Purdue Boilermakers.
In the finale Sunday against the Boilermakers, sophomore infielder Gabrielle Felps pinch hit a go-ahead double, but Purdue scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to draw a tie, which was the first in the history of University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Sophomore catcher Lexie Elkins contributed with two RBI.
In the first win over Northern Iowa, junior pitcher Christina Hamilton pitched a shutout in six innings of relief with one strikeout. She earned her first win of the season.
The Cajuns return to the diamond Feb. 14, when they host the two-day long Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational in which they’ll face the Valparaiso Crusaders, the Michigan Wolverines, the Memphis Tigers and the Central Arkansas Bears.
