Shawn Long to train, Pan American Games
Shawn Long, power forward for the Ragin’ Cajuns men’s basketball team, accepted an invitation from USA Basketball to participate in the 2015 U.S. Pan American Men’s Basketball Team training camp, the organization announced June 29.
The camp, to be held July 7-12 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, will be used to determine Team USA’s 12-man roster for the 2015 Pan American Games men’s basketball competition in Toronto later this month. Long is one of 22 players vying for a spot on the team that will compete against national squads from North, South and Central America as well as the Caribbean.
Long declined to enter the NBA draft this year in order to return to the Ragin’ Cajuns for his senior season. Long was a first-team selection for the All-Sun Belt and All-Louisiana teams as a junior, registering 16.4 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game. The Morgan City native was also a Lou Henson All-America selection.
Gonzaga University head coach Mark Few will coach the team, with Georgia State University head coach Ron Hunter serving as an assistant to provide additional Sun Belt representation. Sixteen of the players, including Long, come from the college ranks, while the other six are professional players from different leagues around the world. Invitee Ryan Hollins played for the Sacramento Kings of the NBA last season.
If he makes the team, Long will join Team USA to take on Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Brazil July 21-23 for their group stage matchups.
