Grad students expect delayed paychecks after winter break
University of Louisiana at Lafayette graduate students will not be receiving a paycheck between Dec. 18 and Feb. 15, according to an anonymous source.
The payroll change will be effective for the summer break as well, and grad students will not receive a paycheck from the day after spring commencement in May until Sept. 15. Before the change, grad students would be paid five times a semester, once every month from January through May and again in August.
The source said this change places stress on grad students because although the meeting to implement this change had been held this past summer, grad students were just notified recently — forcing them to budget on short notice.
“It’s also a huge problem for international grad students because it’s so hard for employers to want to hire them because they have so many paperwork issues,” the source said. “And also they don’t really have access to student loans and things like we do. And because they’re not citizens, they sort of feel like they really don’t have any room to make a fuss or speak up.”
The Graduate Student Organization will meet with the graduate school’s dean and the assistant vice president of Academic and Faculty Affairs in the Helma B. Constantine Room of the Student Union at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to discuss the new payroll plan and possible alternatives.
