UPC hires Karli Sherman for co-adviser position – The Vermilion
The University Program Council hired Karli Sherman in June as a co-adviser to assist its current adviser, Ruben Henderson.
“I’m really excited to work with some really talented students that are a part of UPC,” said Sherman. “There are some really impressive, talented and dedicated, inspiring students in this organization who believe in UL and really believe in connecting students to their university to make sure they’re successful. I love it.”
Karli Sherman has been working closely with Henderson since she joined the University of Louisiana at Lafayette staff June 6 to ensure the university had a successful Welcome Week Block Party.
Before working for UL Lafayette, Karli Sherman worked at the University of West Florida and Florida State University advising their programming boards. Similar to UL Lafayette’s UPC, she assisted in homecoming and campus events.
Sherman will co-advise the UPC alongside Ruben Henderson and primarily advise both the Ragin’ Cajun Spirit Committee and the Traditions Committee, while Henderson directly oversees the Multicultural Affairs Committee and the Late Night Events committee.
“UL has some very unique traditions that other places just don’t have,” added Sherman. “You’re not gonna have a crawfish boil in other places; you’re not gonna have someone jump into a swamp because other places don’t have a swamp or canoe races. UL (Lafayette) has things that make us so unique; I’m pumped.”
Before advising for programming boards at universities, Sherman was a student at UL Lafayette. She received her bachelor’s degree in general studies in 2008. She was an honors student, a part of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and the Student Government Association.
Henderson is the Assistant Director of Student Activities and adviser for the UPC in the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership.
With a background in college admissions, Henderson started off as an enrollment counselor and high school recruiter for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment at UL Lafayette.
Now, Henderson assists and advises multiple student organizations on campus, such as Black Faculty Staff Association, holds advisory roles for The Big Event, Student Leadership Council and is a youth director for Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He is also the adviser of the Black Male Leadership Association.
Henderson said Sherman will perform well as part of the UPC team.
“With her experience and background,” he said, “Karli has been equipped with the skills to be an effective adviser and student affairs professional.”
