2016-2017 Vermilion editor introduces himself
The Vermilion: We’re here for you
Hey, friends! My name is Devin Cochran and I’ll be the new editor-in-chief, or editor for short, of The Vermilion for a while.
My journey at the beloved “Verm” began in Fall 2014. The summer before, I emailed erstwhile editor, Seth Dickerson, almost weekly asking for a job here. He finally responded and gave me my first assignment— the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Since then, I’ve covered a variety of stories, ranging from events, general news, profiles and, my personal favorite: features.
I wanted so desperately to work here because I knew the people who ran this place were journalism majors and the way our curriculum is set up, you don’t meet other journo majors until your junior year.
The first journalism major I met was Kailey Broussard, who is now my web and copy editor. I was giving her a campus tour before the first day of classes in 2014, and I discovered her major was journalism and she worked for the Verm. I was overwhelmed with excitement. I asked her so many questions about what it was like here and my response was a very cold, “Well, I’ve gotten two checks out of it, so I guess it’s all right.”
Since then, Kailey and I have become close friends, and we’ve conquered this department and the Verm side by side.
At the time, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, but now, The Vermilion has been my support system. This crazy, rambunctious team has given me endless support and confidence in everything I’ve done. They’re here for me.
When I think about what I want the Verm to be on this campus, I want it to be here for you.
We work tirelessly to bring you the most current, important and entertaining content on campus and around Lafayette— you wouldn’t believe the work conditions we do it in. This campus is our beat; without you, there is no us.
With that being said, this semester, we’re now bringing you a new Arts and Entertainment section. You all know how rich the the culture is in this town, but do you know how and where to immerse yourself into it?
We’re also working on becoming more involved on campus through service. We’re here to serve you through news reporting and also partnering with organizations for events.
Please understand that it is our mission to hear our readers and give you all what we feel is necessary for you to know, but also what you want to see us do. Over the semester, we’ll be finding out ways to reach out to you guys and get your feedback.
I’m so blessed to have such an amazing team and we can’t wait to serve you all this semester.
