Waterski team hosts third annual Fleur de Ski
This past weekend, Lafayette had the perfect weather for the Ragin’ Cajuns Waterski Team to hold their third annual Fleur de Ski event.
The Ragin’ Cajuns Waterski Team is a recreational club sport at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. They have won six national championships, with their most recent win in 2015.
Louisiana hosted the University of Lafayette at Monroe, University of Texas, University of Arkansas, Louisiana State University, Texas A&M and Texas State at Airport Lake on April 8 and 9.
Head coach Ryan Gonzales has been the coach of the team for five years. He said he is confident in the 2017 National Championship, which will take place in the fall. He said they have a lot of good recruits coming and believes it will be one of the best teams they have ever had.
One thing Coach Gonzales said he wants everyone to know about the team is how intelligent they are. He said approximately 90 percent of the team made the Dean’s List or President’s List last semester. They offer academic scholarships to their students. Many team members come from other countries.
Currently, the team has only four members from the U.S. At the end of this semester, three will be graduating, leaving only one left.
The team receives funding from hosting giveback nights, having sponsors and some student funding. They said they are working towards becoming a more self-funded team.
Each year, the team attends anywhere between five to seven tournaments. They have two events in the spring and between three and five events in the fall.
Gonzales said the lake is open for team members to practice during the week until 3 p.m., and nonparticipating students are allowed to come watch them practice.
Senior Julie Waitt is injured and unable to compete, but when asked about the sport, she said, “There’s nothing like being a student-athlete.”
Throughout the weekend, teams competed in slalom skiing, jumps and tricks.
Senior and team captain Taryn Grant came in first for the Women’s A Slalom event.

The Ragin’ Cajuns Waterski Team will compete in their next tournament in the fall. Dates will be determined in the fall at a skier’s meeting.
