Drones and AI, the hi-tech face of the army

The wars that have broken out around us in recent years – in Europe and the Middle East – require a change of pace for the Italian defense and armed forces. New challenges require new solutions, particularly in the field of cybersecurity and the use of drones, as repeatedly hoped for by the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto.

For this reason today – in front of the Undersecretary of State for Defence, Isabella Rauti, and the Chief of Staff of the Army, Army Corps General Pietro Serino – they will be presented, in the headquarters of the Tactical Information Brigade Command in Anzio, two new units: the 7th «Cimic» Regiment and the 9th «Rombo» Cyber Security Department.

The first inherits the flag of the 3rd «Bondone» Artillery Specialist Group and is equipped with latest generation Remotely Piloted Aircraft (APR), which represent innovative long-range reconnaissance and targeting systems. The use of drones will allow the acquisition of images and information on the territory and then the use of artillery. Today piloted by real men, tomorrow drones could only be managed through artificial intelligence. The second unit, however, takes on the flag and traditions of the 9th «Rombo» Electronic Warfare Battalion. His task is to study and imagine possible enemy attacks to implement a defense plan. It is also capable of protecting the Armed Force’s networks in the event of an attack. As a framework for both, that of Cimic, which represents a center of excellence in civil and military cooperation.

This technological development had been underway for some time, with the so-called Army 4.0 and is now bearing fruit. But it’s only the beginning. Because we are also working on new robotic systems capable of changing, once again, the face of conflicts. This is a broader plan, integrated with new technologies that will be developed thanks to collaboration with institutes and industries linked to Defense.
