Biden reacts: off to military action. So the US will strike Iran

Last night, Joe Biden announced that it had made the decision regarding how the US will respond to the matrix attack Iranian which killed three American soldiers in Jordan. No further details have been released, but there is now certainty that the US will take action a military action. The three soldiers killed, and more than 40 wounded, on Sunday night are the first American victims since the attack in Israel on October 7, and the subsequent escalation in the Middle East. So far, the United States has tried to stay away from direct involvement as much as possible. “We don’t need a major war in the Middle East. This is not what I want,” Biden declared just yesterday during a fundraising event in Florida. Certainly, the attack on US soldiers it is a problem that now complicates the president’s life quite a bit, and which has materialized the fears of the military leaders, who have been on high alert since October 7 to prevent an event that, in the end, they were unable to avoid.

Now, this tragedy also comes into play in the electoral campaign. Donald Trump, in his style, fans the flames, declaring that this new crisis is “the consequence of Biden’s weakness and surrender. We must return to ‘peace through strength’. Our country cannot survive with Joe Biden as president.” Republican Senator Lindsey Graham also stated that “the policy of deterrence against Iran failed miserably,” and said the US should strike targets on Iranian soil.

While Biden also directly blamed Iran, he didn’t say a word about the possibility of one direct clash. The prudent attitude of the National Security Council suggests that such a clash probably will not occur, but that the response will be “appropriate” to use the words of Admiral John Kirby, a member of the council. “We are not looking for another war – he added – we are not looking for an escalation. We will respond, following our priorities and our times, and we will do so in the way the president deems most appropriate.”

The Biden administration clearly wants to avoid that a direct conflict with Iran, but he cannot afford to turn his face away and show his weakness. The most plausible actions are targeted airstrikes on Iranian personnel in Syria or Iraq, or on Iranian naval positions in the Persian Gulf. It is therefore a matter of days, or hours, before the United States strikes in the Middle East.
